Sacramento authorities are probing a shooting that erupted late Saturday at Howe Park in Sacramento just as deputies were clearing an unsanctioned gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first called to Howe Park around 6:30 in the evening after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Not long after, a second caller reported concerning a potential altercation breaking out within the park grounds.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but reported no active disturbance. However, authorities discovered that an enormous crowd had assembled at the park without permission.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies worked to disperse the crowd by forming a perimeter and making announcements ordering the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Nearly 15 minutes were spent for individuals to vacate.
Just as the crowd began to move that an estimated 20 to 25 shots cut through the air. The shots sent the crowd running in all directions. Officers immediately began locating gunshot victims.
Those Who Were Hit
Altogether, four victims were discovered with shooting injuries. The victims — including a female and three males all believed to be in their 20s — were transported to nearby hospitals. Emergency physicians reported that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one sustained moderate wounds, and one suffered minor injuries. In a positive development, each of the four victims was stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District also responded and aided in treating the four victims at the scene.
Crime Scene Evidence
Most of the gunfire was determined to have occurred near the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot store on the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Investigators recovered extra shell casings along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were identified in the wrought iron fence alongside the Home Depot store. This ballistic evidence confirmed that one of the gunmen had been shooting in a southerly direction from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot building and parking lot. The Home Depot was put under lockdown during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives remained on scene late into the evening.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Intelligence received over police scanner frequencies revealed that a suspect Kia was intercepted in an area within Solano County. Four occupants Arden Arcade Sacramento crime 2026 were detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for questioning. Video reviewed at the scene revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
